Cuba Libre.
Its interesting how drinking varies by country and even regionally. I grew up in a household that enjoyed limes in their cocktails, Rum, Tequila, Gin… you name it. When I came to the US and would head to the bars and ask for a cuba libre (adding salt to the glass rim), some bartenders would look at me as if I was spitting into the holy grail of cocktail making.
While I drank my fare share of rum in Mexico (Bacardi) I wanted to try different things so when I got to SF and saw “Captain Morgan” as a preferred rum (among college types) I thought making a Cuba libre would be a good idea… WRONG! Spiced rum must be one of the things I despise the most, why? it just taste like a teenager drink, that buttery after taste just wont mix with limes or salt for that matter… or even alone!
Anyway, Rum brands that I recommend to mix for a cuba libre are Havana, Appleton Estate, Bacardi, Don Q and more but scratch out the spiced rum.
CUBA LIBRE
- Salt on the rim of your glass
- 2/3 Ice cubes
-Squeeze a lime and a half in the glass
-There is a saying in Mexico that goes: “Cada quién sus cubas” Which means “To each their own” but literally means “To each their own… cubas”. So put as much rum you want (depending how much of a rough day you had, but fill 3/4 of the glass)
-Now fill the glass with Coke and mix it….
-Chug and repeat.
